The only issue these engines have is their low-flow cooling system. The cooling system is defined by two flow loops one for the engine and the other for cooling purposes. Has new radiator in it runs a little over 200 degrees in a couple of miles. We had an 89 Volvo with a low flow system. I have a 350 cummins low flow that gets hot under a load. There are two thermostats one is for circulating coolant strictly thru the engine block and at about 160 the other begins to open as the bypass thermostat starts to close circulating water to the radiator heat exchanger.

    And the manual screw is screwed out all trhe way.If that is so there will not be any thing in the pump that can cause the engine to die slow.And you did check and make sure your lines to the head is not made of a larger than 5/16 id.Check the return for bubbles because you may not know who has been trying to set the over head and if some one dont know they can crack the injector cups by mis setting them. If they do increase a great deal then set that injector and if it is set ok then pull the injector and replace.Remenber you will have some bubbles from a new engine like that.The injectors of that age can not check 100 % of the compression like injector do today.I understand you say you did change the shut down valve. Then let the injector back up and see if the bubbles increase. But with line in fuel and engine warm and running take a over head adjusting wrench which should be 3/4 on your engine and hold the injector down all the way in its self and watch to see if the bubbles almost stop flowing from the return.

    Thanks in advanceĪ lose injector setting or a cracked injector cup will do that but you would have smoke on start up and a half miss.The way to check for a cracked cup is put the return line in a bucket of fuel and you will have bubbles but cant have too many and i can not tell you how much too many is.

    I know a lot of you guys are more knowledgeable than me on this and I am looking for any ideas of where to start to try to line this thing out. My question is, could it be the vegetable oil they were running in it also have messed up the injectors? The truck runs fine though, sometimes it has a little hesitation if you just stomp it and mash it to the floor, but clears right out. I have just been putting the truck in gear and stalling it to kill it. I put a new kill solenoid, it did the same thing. A good example is when an ole carbureted car or truck will sit there diesel as I call it, and not want to die when you shut the key off. When you shut the key off, the engine will not die instantly, it kinda sputters for a few seconds, then dies. Once it fires, it seems to run good, does not smoke, a little normal black smoke when you stomp it. It has to turn over about 5-10 seconds before it starts, even after the truck has been started warmed up good. My problem is it seems like it loses its prime a little when you start the truck. I pulled the pump, took and had it completely went through and rebuilt at diesel injection, put it back on and it runs good now. I pressure washed the tanks out, degreased the inside of them to get all the crap out, then put the fresh fuel and filters in it. I drained the fuel, and upon draining it, I discovered that the previous owner had tried to make some homemade bio fuel, which it looked like mainly vegetable oil that came out of the tanks. I figured fuel pump, but before I removed it wanted to change the fuel 1st and see if that helped. I hauled the truck in, and when i got it in here, it wouldn't run worth a darn would not idle, very sluggish. I have a 1977 350 small cam in a truck I recently just bought.
